Will it be Obama?

The election this year may be one for the history books. For mere diversity, we have an interesting race. On the Democratic side, we have had an African-American and a woman as the two front-runners, but also in the race has been Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who is of Latino heritage. On the Republican side, we have a born-again Christian pastor and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (a.k.a. Mormon).

Before we go patting ourselves on our back, however, we should remember that the majority of the candidates are still white men. And before we start declaring this a year of firsts, we should remember that many other countries have had women in leadership roles - as presidents or prime ministers.

And yet, for America, as egalitarian as we think we are, this is the first time it has appeared that either a woman or a black person has offered a real possibility of election. I was just recently sent a link of Barack Obama speaking at Martin Luther King's old church. It was a stirring and powerful speech. It is worth watching when you have 15-20 minutes.

Will it be Obama? I don't know. But after this speech, I am excited to see what is ahead.

Peace,
Huffman

I realize that having a woman and a black man runnig for our next president is not the usual. Though those characteristics stand out to the public, possibly, more than the other candidates, I believe we have to look beyond those characteristics and really look at what they stand for. Somehow I feel like people are supporting these two candidates just out of curiosity to see "what will the U.S. be like with a black/woman president" I think it's time to ge real because time is running out.

It seems that Obama has the right idea in changing the way Americans should view each other and how people should stand up for what they believe in.

i hope Obama wins! i mean, i hate looking in the history books under the section that lists all the Presidents and seeing only WHITE men. seriously. but i dont know. hopefully he wins so it'll shake America up. This, Obama, is what MLKJ was talking about the start. Having a black man in office. it is his dream...in reality! i say VOTE FOR BARACK and lets CHANGE the world!

ps. funny joke- dont take offense. laugh.
Q:why do black people only have nightmares and not dreams?
A:cus the last man to have a dream got shot!
haha.

First off, let me say welcome to everyone who has posted so far. I'm glad to see you all here.

I think Melissa makes an excellent point. It makes about as much sense to vote fore someone because they are black or a woman as it does not to. But that being said, I do think Obama has some powerful things to say about where this country is and where it could go.

In all seriousness, though, I am going to be honest here. The positions of Obama, Clinton and Edwards are not that dissimilar. So, given that I think they would all make a good president, I think it might be a step forward for this nation to elect someone who isn't a white man. By itself, that would not be a good criteria

Did anyone click on the link in the blog and watch the speech? That speech is what really sold me on Obama as a leader. Check it out if you haven't already.

Also, Adam, welcome. We are all SO glad you are here. Especially the black people that you love so much. :)

Justice, then unity, then peace,
Huffman

I think that Obama would be a good president. It seem like he has the right ideas and words to back those ideas up. I he wins i have a feeling people are going to try to assassinate him.

i agree with melissa. The fact that hes black doesnt really matter to me as long as he keeps his promises and brings change to the way things are now.
